Clip, clamp, brace, stitch, and chain: the Paperclip studio of spring 2020 asked how peer-to-peer habitats could be made in Austin. Austin grows because it stays peculiar: its growth is driven by the sheer quantity of its distinct places, and the city exists concurrently, in the simultaneity of its situations. More than polycentric, Austin is pluralistic, produced cooperatively and bottom-up: residents do not consume the city but reside it. Reversing the city from a context to embed into to a context to extract from, the studio condensed it into a new form of building, plural and peculiar, and, building on blockchain technologies, composed what is shared by distributive means only. Its students answered with assemblies: The Independent, a post-rental housing scheme by Aldryn John Matias; a hydroponic mat building by Tanvi Solanki; When Living Turns into a Park, a vertical park by Eleanor Brauchle; and a distributed agriculture project by Aren Edwards, whose master thesis received a Design Excellence Award in 2020. The format continued in 2021 as The Paperclip and other AI-Complements and in 2022 as Architectural Interfaces, co-taught with Casey Rehm, where the thesis of Marco Pierce received the award again. Design Studio III, the combinatorial art of co-living, followed in fall 2020.

Three-Nine
Three architecture machines arranged 382,659 building parts into variations on a nine-square grid, resembling the daily spatial use of 500 people in downtown Austin. A cloud-based consensus simulation developed with Unity Technologies; the model was built for the Mebane Gallery exhibition of 2022.

Touching Slabs: mixed-reality assemblies
